Portfolio - The Chronicles Of Spellborn

Unreal Tournament 2004 based MMORPG for the PC, developed in The Hague, The Netherlands (official website).

Still in development

History

Starting out as a 1,5 year project, Spellborn is now nearly 3 years in development. Built on top of Epic's renowned Unreal Tournament 2004 enginethis project provided me with real gaming industry experience. I've seen all the good, bad and very ugly sides of the gaming industry during this project.

This project also gave me experience in working in large teams (50+). I often sat down with game designers to discuss gameplay features and implementations.

Technical details

The original UT2k4 engine was ripped apart to suit our needs, in which I participated heavily. I was involved in replacing the network code, updated memory management, rewrote a number of basic systems, and updated Epic's UC language and compiler to include new features. Furthermore I wrote the database system Spellborn uses, many gameplay features like character appearance, skills and effects, bodyslots, character creation, and many more. I was also responsible for developing an OS-independent build system, so the servers can run on Linux as well (and perhaps the client one day too).
