Okay, the vet told me that the anomaly on Sams head should be shrinking by now, if it was an infection. It should be smaller by Friday, he said, but it clearly isn't. So Sam's scheduled for surgery next Friday... poor bastard, I hope that if it is really cancer, it's not metastasizing yet... :(
